Abstract

Introduction: Malnutrition is a key determinant of surgical outcomes, increasing the risk of postoperative complications, morbidity, and prolonged hospital stays. It is recommended to apply a nutritional screening method to all hospitalized patients, in particular to those undergoing surgery, since it allows for the identification of those at nutritional risk and the implementation of appropriate preoperative interventions, promoting better surgical outcomes. General objective: To determine the prevalence of nutritional risk in hospitalized preoperative patients. Material and methods: A prospective, observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted on preoperative adult patients admitted to the surgery department of President Perón hospital between June and July 2023. The Perioperative Nutrition Screen (PONS) tool was used to determine nutritional risk. Results: Nineteen patients were evaluated. The prevalence of nutritional risk was 57.9 %. Most patients belonged to the General Surgery Department. The most affected PONS variable was reduced dietary intake, observed in 73% of patients at risk. Conclusions: Identifying malnutrition upon admission is essential to preventing or minimizing the progression of complications associated with illness, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality risk. Likewise, evaluating nutritional status during the perioperative period becomes crucial for determining patients’ nutritional condition and implementing the best nutritional strategy before surgery.
