Epidemiological and health approach in oncological patients in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, from territorial surveys in popular neighborhoods of La Plata.

Introduction: Social confinement as a health decision would be a highly effective measure to prevent the spread of SARS-COV-2 infections, but it would also have limited medical attention for other pathologies. Therefore, among the so-called third-order impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, there
would be those due to the progression of chronic conditions of certain diseases, a phenomenon that is overexpressed in vulnerable populations. Objective: To evaluate how Preventive and Compulsory Social Isolation in population contexts of health and socioeconomic vulnerability, affects neglect of
health status, deterioration in the progression of the oncological disease, and/or other comorbidities. Method: An epidemiological and health approach, with observational, analytical, and prospective characteristics, was conducted to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with oncological disease. Social and health data were gathered through validated surveys. Clinical signs, blood, and urine samples were collected for laboratory testing after approved protocols and informed consents were provided. Health needs arising from the pandemic were identified. Results: A greater
risk of negative impact on the progress of oncological disease because of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 is suggested, due to the interruption in clinical care and the additional complexities in adhering to treatments and controls, either for oncological disease or other existing comorbidities. Discussion: Having evidence of the health status of populations allowed for the generation of clinical/social care actions and their prompt connection with the health system. Although the results are preliminary, a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and convalescence is suggested, generating a
negative impact on the general population and the health system.
