Abstract

Introduction: Weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) is one of
the most common procedures in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Overall, just over half of patients requiring MV are extubated after a weaning process. Several studies have reported that weaning protocols reduced the total duration of ventilation, the duration of
weaning, and the length of ICU stay without affecting mortality or
adverse events.
Objective: To evaluate the results in terms of weaning success and duration of a weaning protocol designed for patients on Mechanical
Ventilatory Assistance (MVA) admitted to the ICU of Dr. A. Balestrini
Hospital applied between March and June 2024 compared to the
extubation method used in the period from December 2023 to February 2024.
Materials and method: Observational before-after study, carried out at Dr. Alberto Balestrini Hospital between December 2023 and
May 2024.
Results: 109 patients were included in total, divided in two groups. Group 1 (protocol implementation n 24) vs group 2 (no protocol implementation n 58) showed a statistically significant difference (p= 0.008) for weaning success. For weaning classification according to the WEAN SAFE study, there were no significant differences
between groups.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that implementing a Mechanical Ventilation weaning protocol may improve weaning outcomes in patients with MVA, which may have important clinical implications for the management of these patients in intensive care settings.
