Breastfeeding education and support in health residencies in the province of Buenos Aires

Abstract

Introduction: Training in human lactation (HL) during the education of health professionals is, according to published studies, inadequate and inconsistent. In other countries, a lack of support has been observed during residents’ breastfeeding journeys. Objectives: To determine the current 
state of training and support for residents in the public health sector in the province of Buenos Aires in the context of lactation. Methodology: A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted surveying the provincial programs of health residencies. The results of voluntary and anonymous 
surveys aimed at educational referents were then evaluated. Results: 13.4% of the analyzed programs include breastfeeding or lactation in their content. Among the 52 responses received, 56% mentioned its inclusion in their programs, while 44% informed that it was not included. Approximately 
60% reported a lack of lactation rooms in their workplace, and that 1 in 3 individuals who breastfed during their residency stated that their right to reduced working hours was not respected. A situation similar to that described in other countries was identified in the surveyed health residencies and programs. There is significant potential for improving the training and support for breastfeeding 
and lactation among professionals undergoing postgraduate health specialization in the province of Buenos Aires. Conclusion: Understanding and assessing the problem at the local level could help propose appropriate strategies for improvement. This would offer an enriching contribution to the 
professional training and personal development of those involved in guiding individuals through 
health-illness-care processes
