Precisions on the Sociodemographic Profile of Online Gamblers in Argentina

INTRODUCTION: The study aims to describe the sociodemographic profile of online gamblers in Argentina, identifying their behavior patterns, motivations, and consequences, as well as the role of the state in regulating online gambling. METHOD: A national survey stratified by geographic region was conducted and calibrated to ensure representativeness. RESULTS: Of the 1,313 participants, 23% reported regular online gambling. Women participate slightly more than men, though the difference is not statistically significant. The likelihood of gambling regularly increases as age decreases, with the highest participation seen in the 26-35 and 36-45 age groups, both showing greater propensity compared to those over 66 (OR = 7.67, p < 0.001; OR = 7.01, p < 0.001). Additionally, individuals with lower educational levels are more likely to gamble, particularly those who did not complete secondary education (OR = 3.38, p < 0.001) or only finished primary school (OR = 2.84, p = 0.048). People from lower and lower-middle socioeconomic levels are also more likely to gamble than those from higher levels (OR = 3.13, p = 0.002; OR = 2.99, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The results align with international studies, showing that younger individuals, especially those aged 26-35, and people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are the most likely to engage in online gambling.
